Gargnano

|
Gargnano lies on the western shore of the lake, protect from the cold northern winds by a crown of mountains and hills. Its territory is composed by several hamles; on the slopes that surround the town, the mild climate created the ideal conditions for the growing of cedars, lemons, olive trees, cypresses.
The center of Gargnano is gathered near the harbour, where elegant palaces lie, among which the communal palace, built at the end of 1500. In the facade taht is turned toward the lake, there are, walled in the building, the cannon balls that an Austrian ship shot against the town in 1866, during the third War of Italian Independence.
The oldest church of Gargnano, San Giacomo, is dated back to the XII century and has been recently restored.
Outside, on a sidewall, there are three fourteenth century frescoes. Inside, on a valuable altar, the sixteenth-century wooden statue of San Giacomo.
Among the villas that lie on the lake, Villa Feltrinelli, built at the end of the 1800's. It had a part in one of the darker episodes of the last war: it was seat of the secretariat of Mussolini during the Republic of Salò; while in San Faustino there is the villa that Mussolini chose as personal residence.
