Garda

| The gulf of Garda is a jewel dominated by the blue of the lake and Mediterranean vegetation. In the North the gulf is closed by the mount Luppia, while in the South the hill of the Rocca (stronghold) rises: through a steep path it is possible to go up, in order to enjoy a breathtaking panorama. On the Rocca, in medieval age, the castle of Garda rose; it was so important, that the lake changed the name from 'Benacus' to the current 'lago di Garda'.
The ancient village is worthy a visit, because of his gothic palaces of the lake promenade and the beautiful Palace of the Captain of the Lake, where a time the Corporation of the fishermen gathered.
Built up in XI century, today the church of Santa Maria is integrated in the sacristy of the parish church, fruit of changes and restorations that extended until 1700.
In the bell tower, of 1571, fragments of Longobard and Romanesque sculptures have been walled. The cloister with porch is dated back to fifteenth century.
Among the works that can be admired inside, a statue representing the 'Madonna with the Child' of XVI century, a Christ Crucified of the half of the 1500's and various canvases. Very beautiful are also the villas, among which, Villa Becelli-Albertini, where Carlo Alberto (king of Sardinia from 1831 to 1849), veteran of the Battle of Peschiera, received in the 1848 Lombardic delegation that delivered the action of annexation to the Piemonte.
